Shaw Digital Phone lasts less than a week, Vonage stays.

Vonage gets to stay.

Less than a week ago I mentioned that I was going to try out Shaw’s new digital phone.

The verdict is in. And this service just isn’t ready for prime time.

Here’s why.

One of the key features of a telephone is that when people call you, they get through.

However, this hasn’t been the case.

My beta tester (my business partner) has grown weary of trying to call me on my ‘new’ phone only to get a message saying that there are no circuits available.

Now, if she was on the other side of the world, that might be ok, but she lives about 15 miles away as the crow flies. And this isn’t just one or two occurances. It’s been every day.

When calling out, people have complained about poor quality – certainly this happens with my Vonage phone as well – but Shaw has made a big deal about saying their Quality of Service is better.

Sorry Shaw.

  1. I’m really wondering if this is still the situation – a year later. Esp the concern on Vonage not being able to connect to 1-800 numbers.

We have Shaw digital without problem at all, but we were considering killing it just to save money and use only Vonage. Then we began to worry about condo-door access (the “Buzz Code”) – will it work without a land line?

We have two condos, one in Toronto and another in Victoria. The Toronto one has a full concierge and security system – and the buzz code thing will ring in our cell phones, anywhere in the world for that matter. No land line in Toronto. But we have no concierge or security or services like that in Victoria – no one to even ask, I’m afraid. So I guess we’re stuck there with a land line, just so we can let the Pizza guy in!
